What is The Blood of Dawnwalker?

The Blood of Dawnwalker is a dark fantasy role-playing game set in Vale Sangora, a fictional gothic kingdom in the Carpathian Mountains during the 14th century. A devastating plague sweeps the realm, and when the mortal king orders every infected subject executed, the ancient vampire Brencis seizes power with his followers. He cancels the old taxes, offers humans a taste of undead blood that cures the plague, and replaces those taxes with a monthly blood tax — a gathering where the weak and infirm are quietly put to death. Coen, the eldest child of a peasant family in the village of Laslea, is taken by Brencis's vampires and turned, but the ritual fails. He becomes a Dawnwalker: half human, half vampire, able to walk in the morning sun, while the vampires believe he died. Your goal is to rescue his abducted family before Brencis completes his coronation, with 30 days and nights of in-game time to spend however you choose.

Time Limit: The 30-Day Countdown

Following the prologue you have 30 days and 30 nights to save Coen's family before Brencis is crowned. Time is a resource rather than a real-time clock: each day holds eight daytime segments and eight nighttime segments, 480 in total, and segments are spent by quest steps, certain conversations, moving obstacles, and ability upgrades. Costs can carry across a phase change, so an action that overspends your remaining daylight continues into the night.

Day and Night Forms

Coen changes with the sun. By day he stays in human form and can use witchcraft abilities; at night his vampiric side takes over, making him stronger, able to drain blood, and able to use Shadowstep mobility. Deciding which form and which phase suits a task shapes how you route each day, especially since time spent can roll over from daylight into the night.

Directional Combat

Combat is slower and more deliberate than a typical action game, built around four-way directional attacking and defending. In early encounters, matching your guard to the incoming attack direction matters far more than the direction of your own strikes; attack direction gains value once skill-tree perks reward it. Holding block while adjusting guard with the movement stick or WASD makes timed blocks easier. Attacking and dodging cost stamina, and an empty bar leaves Coen fatigued, slower, and exposed.

Open-World Exploration on Foot

The explorable valley spans roughly 10 km² — about 4 km tall by 3 km wide at its widest points — and is entirely landmass, covering forest, swamp, mountain, cave, meadow, settlement, ruin, and mine terrain. It is divided into 10 named regions, from Laslea Glen, Briar Sloughs, and Maragir Wealds to Svartrau City, The Slits, and Tantari Woods. There are no mounts or horses: travel is on foot, with Towers marking quests and collectibles, Shrines for fast travel, and skills such as Shapeshift or Mercurial Fervour to speed up movement.

Romance and Relationships

Coen can romance three characters — the Laslea herbalist and healer Anca, the vrakhiri vampire Lacra, and Crake — and is not locked into one partner per playthrough. Romance runs on dialogue choices and quest progress rather than hidden affinity meters, so flirting when the opportunity appears, picking supportive responses, and accepting personal help prompts such as treating wounds carries you to a declaration near the end of each questline. Anca has the heaviest presence in the main arc and epilogue.

Skills, Perks and Progression

Coen grows through Vampirism and Witchcraft skill trees. Vampirism provides abilities such as the Shapeshift travel skill, while Witchcraft offers options like Mercurial Fervour. Combat perks include Endless Effort, which raises the maximum stamina pool, and Fleet of Foot, which reduces the stamina consumed by dodging. Leveling skills and learning abilities consumes time segments, so what you buy competes directly with the days you spend on quests and characters.

In practice, a day in Vale Sangora is a budgeting exercise. An hourglass indicator shows what a choice will cost before you commit to it, and because quest steps, conversations, ability upgrades, and even clearing a path can each consume segments, you cannot finish every storyline and still reach Brencis in time — you choose which characters and threads to follow, and the ending you reach follows from those choices. Basic traversal and observation are free, so scouting Towers, Shrines, and points of interest never costs you daylight. Session length follows the same logic: a focused story-mode rush to Brencis can take as little as 5-10 hours, HowLongToBeat community data puts main objectives around 21.5 hours and 100% completion around 49.5 hours, and higher difficulty or heavy exploration pushes past 50 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Estimates vary by playstyle. HowLongToBeat community data lists roughly 21.5 hours for main objectives and about 49.5 hours for 100% completion, while reviewers report 15-hour story-mode runs and 50+ hour exploration- or difficulty-heavy playthroughs.

How does the 30-day time limit work?

You have 30 days and nights before Brencis's coronation. Time advances only when you commit to actions with a cost — quest steps, certain conversations, and ability upgrades — never in real time. Each day and night holds eight segments, for 480 in total.

Can Coen romance more than one character?

Yes. Anca, Lacra, and Crake can all be romanced in a single playthrough, and being friendly with several of them does not lock you out. Romance is driven by dialogue choices and quest progression rather than hidden affinity meters.

Are there mounts or fast travel?

There are no mounts or horses; the roughly 10 km² valley is explored entirely on foot. Shrines provide fast travel, Towers mark quests and collectibles, and skills such as Shapeshift or Mercurial Fervour can speed up foot travel.
